On Tuesday, the New York Yankees had a 4-0 lead through seven innings at home against the Minnesota Twins, but gave it all back in the eighth before losing 5-4 in 10 innings. High-priced new setup man Rafael Soriano was charged with all four runs in the eighth, but got a lot of help from poor outfield defense from Nick Swisher and poor managing from Yankees skipper Joe Girardi.

One of the Steinbrenner boys said the Yankees giving Soriano a $35 million contract this past offseason was the next best thing to getting Cliff Lee. Soriano was the best closer in baseball last year for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, but on Tuesday he walked two and gave up two singles while getting only two outs. It has to be tough for a guy used to closing the ninth to focus with a four-run cushion in the eighth, but the Yankees were still up 4-1 when Girardi chose to pull Soriano for Dave Robertson with the bases loaded and two outs.

Robertson proceeded to give up a three-run double to another former Devil Ray, Delmon Young. The ball was misplayed by Yankee outfielder Nick Swisher, who let the ball get by him.

“I came in there just flying in there trying to make the play,” Swisher said of his game-changing miscue. “I got there and realized I wasn’t going to make it, but I was already halfway into a slide. In that situation, it was an aggressive mistake.

Boone Logan walked the leadoff man in the top of the 10th, then gave up back-to-back hits to surrender the winning run.
