Does MMA need a cruiserweight division? MMA Fighting recently entertained that notion and yesterday we wrote about Frank Mir and his desire to move all the way down to the light-heavyweight division. Mir would definitely be the beneficiary of that new division.

MMA Fighting wrote: “Have a weight class with a limit of 235, and guys like Mir will be right at home. So will guys like Mirko Cro Cop, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Cheick Kongo and other heavyweights who would have a huge size disadvantage against the Lesnars and Carwins of the world but would have a huge struggle to get down to 205. It’s certainly a valid argument.”

I couldn’t agree more. Here are some other fighters (in no particular order) that would benefit and/or excel in the new weight class.

  • Stefan Struve Struve is young enough – and certainly big enough — to bulk up with more weight. But as a submission specialist Struve will have a lot of trouble engaging the big boys of the division. Struve would be able to better work his best skills as a cruiserweight.
  • Pat Barry At 5’11” and 235 lbs., Barry would be much better served throwing his huge bombs in the cruiserweight division. Eventually his size will catch up to him as a heavyweight.
  • Jon Madsen The season 10 “Ultimate Fighter” combatant has the perfect frame for the cruiserweight division, and it’s doubtful that he has enough power to hang with the monsters like Carwin and Lesnar.
  • Brendan Schaub Schaub had no problem with the massive Marcus Jones or Madsen on the TUF show. But he could easily cut a bit to make cruiserweight, and it would serve his career well.
  • Cain Velasquez Velasquez may end up dismantling the whole heavyweight division and own the title. But if the Carwin and Lesnar duo prove to be too strong for him, Cain could easily make — and dominate — the cruiserweight division.
  • Junior Dos Santos Dos Santos is just like Velaszquez — he may be the UFC heavyweight champ some day very soon. But if they do make the new division, Dos Santos would be among the best at cruiserweight.
