Tuesday night at Target Field, the Minnesota Twins beat Cleveland 6-4 thanks to a four-run rally in the eighth inning, then stuck around to watch the Chicago White Sox lose in Oakland and give the Twins their second straight AL Central championship.  The Twins are the first team in baseball to clinch a division title, and still have their sights on catching the Yankees for the best record in the American League.

With 11 regular season games left, the Twins are 91-60, one game behind the Yankees at 92-59. Home field is probably crucial if the Twins want any chance of making it through the Yankees and Devil Rays to their first World Series since 1991. Minnesota’s victory on Tuesday was their 51st home win of the season, only the Braves and Phillies have more this year. Still manager Ron Gardenhire dropped hints that he’ll prioritize setting up his rotation and getting everyone healthy over getting home-field advantage:

Considering we’ve been to Game 163 the last couple years, I think this might work out a little bit better for us. At least I know we’ll be rested for the first game, and that’s a nice thought that we can get some people healthy and kind of set things up a little bit easier than we have the last couple years.

Minnesota was mediocre in the first half with only a 46-42 record, but are 45-18 since, but it’s still hard to see them beating the teams in the AL East, especially on the road in a longer series.

The Twins celebrated with the home fans once the Chicago-Oakland game went final.  Back in the locker room, Jim Thome was giving awkward hugs and ear rubs to everyone (NESW has video). “It never gets old, that’s for sure,” said Michael Cuddyer, who’s been filling in at first for injured Justin Morneau. “It feels really special.”

Special or not, I’d be surprised almost shocked if they won two playoff games.
