The brand new Levi’s Stadium in Santa, Clara, California has had the turf ripped out of it for the second time in just a few days. The new home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers has caused nothing but trouble for the team since they started practicing and playing there. Towards the end of the preseason schedule the 49ers were beaten at home by the Denver Broncos. Three days later head coach Jim Harbaugh said the field was too dangerous and pulled his players off of it during a public practice.

The entire playing surface was then torn up and re-sodded. The 49ers managed to beat the San Diego Chargers in their next home preseason contest, but the new turf didn’t hold up to the pounding it took from the players. The field ruptured in some areas and it was visible to the naked eye. The next day the turf was being ripped out once again.

According to reports from local San Francisco newspapers, the NFL team still isn’t sure what type of grass to install. However, time will soon be running out for them to make up their mind since their first league game takes place on September 14th when they host the Chicago Bears. The 49ers play their opening game on the road, but there’s a soccer game scheduled there for September 6 when Chile takes on Mexico.

The stadium’s spokespeople said the thicker sod that was used for the club’s final preseason game was just a temporary solution. The team will be doing some work on the sand base which is below the field In addition, the areas behind the end zones and the sidelines will also be replaced for the first time with the new turf. The budget for the original turf was $1.4 million, but the 49ers announced that they’ll pay for the new sod instead of using public money.

The club said it may use Bandera Bermuda sod for the stadium’s playing surface, which is a relatively new type of grass that’s used just in California, or it may try out a type of grass called Tifway, which is used by numerous other NFL clubs. Kicker Phil Dawson said he’s glad the team doesn’t play at Levi’s Stadium again until September 14 as it will give the club time to sort everything out.
