Tiger Tweets Apology For Spit

On Sunday, Tiger Woods spit on the 12th green during a disappointing final round of the Dubai Desert Classic (watch video in yesterday’s post). On Monday, the European Tour slapped Tiger with a fine, but didn’t disclose an amount. On Tuesday morning, Tiger reached into the very depths of his soul to offer a heartfelt apology … on Twitter.

Tiger took to his iPhone to let everyone know this: “The Euro Tour is right – it was inconsiderate to spit like that and I know better. Just wasn’t thinking and want to say I’m sorry.” For those of you keeping score at home, it was Tiger’s first tweet in three weeks, his first since staying true to his West Coast roots and letting the world know he prefers Tupac to Biggie.

So Tiger cares enough to have someone send out an apology in his name, but not quite enough to actually go in front of a camera and say the words himself. He’s probably hoping everyone will have forgotten about this by the time he tees it up next week in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, where his first round opponent might be Thomas Bjorn of Denmark, winner of the Qatar Masters two weeks ago.

According to Newsday, Tiger’s fine was likely no more than $16,000 and possibly as little as $400. Some have pointed out that Tiger is perhaps being held to a higher standard for spitting, since Steve Marino also spit on camera at Pebble Beach on Sunday and was not fined. Sergio Garcia also spit into the hole in a tournament in 2007 and wasn’t fined either.
