The Tampa Bay Rays took over first place in the American League East on Tuesday with a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 11th inning. The game winner was hit by a relative unknown – Reid Brignac.

Brignac took the place of Carl Crawford, who was ejected in the ninth inning. The homerun came off New York reliever Sergio Mitre. The crazy part of the game was, this run was the games only run.

C.C. Sabathia and David Price dueled it out for 8 innings, with Sabathia allowing 2 hits and Price yielding 3. Grant Balfour picked up the win for Tampa Bay, moving him to 2-1 on the season.

The win for the Rays moved them to 87-56 overall, ½ game ahead of the New York Yankees for the top spot in the American League East. New York is now 87-57 overall.

The two teams will play the second game of the series on Tuesday when Tampa Bay sending Matt Garza to the mound. Garza holds a 14-8 record on the season. New York will counter with Ivan Nova. The 23 year old has made four starts in his rookie season, winning one with no losses on the year.
