NFL football players often suffer some pretty serious injuries during games. In fact some of them are so gruesome they could lead to a player’s forced retirement or knock them out for the season. However, rarely do we see an NFL star injure himself so badly that he has to sit out the remainder of the campaign. That’s exactly what happened to middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch of the Detroit Lions though as he tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee while celebrating a sack on quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The incident took place in the first quarter of the Lions 19-7 win at home against the Green Bay Packers.

Tulloch returned to the contest shortly after the injury, but he then had to be removed from the field as he couldn’t continue playing. Tulloch watched the rest of the game from the sidelines before having his knee checked out with an MRI the following day. Detroit’s head coach Jim Caldwell told the media he isn’t sure who will take Tulloch’s place for the rest of the year, but linebacker DeAndre Levy took over for him after he suffered the ligament tear.

However, Caldwell did confirm that rookie kicker Nate Freese was released from the team after the win over Green Bay. Freese missed a 41-yard field goal during the game and was had concerted just three field goals on seven attempts so far this season. Alex Henery will now take over the kicking duties for the Lions.

Caldwell said he is obviously disappointed that Tulloch will miss the remainder of the 2014 season because of a freak injury. But he said he’s didn’t really have a problem with Tulloch’s celebration following his sack since he likes to see his players show enthusiasm during games. It was the 29-year-old Tulloch’s second sack of the season.
