Rory McIlroy Wins Second Straight FedEx Cup Event

Rory McIlroy won again on Sunday, winning his second PGA Tour FedEx Cup playoff event in as many weeks and his third tournament in his last four starts. Rory won the BMW Championship by two strokes over Lee Westwood and Phil Mickelson, while Tiger Woods rallied to tie for fourth. Rory also became the first player since Tiger in 2009 to win back-to-back PGA Tour events.

Even Rory is surprised at his own recent success.‘‘I didn’t think everything would happen so quickly, but I’m on a good run at the minute and I want to keep it going as long as I can,’’ said Rory.

The next and final playoff event is the Tour Championship in two weeks, and Rory can win the FedEx Cup championship and a $10 million bonus if he can make it three straight wins. Tiger, Mickelson, Nick Watney and Brandt Snedeker could also win the FedEx Cup and the bonus with a victory at the Tour Championship, as could any of the other golfers in the 30-man field with a win and some help depending on how the leaderboard shakes out.

As good as he’s played the last month or so, Rory still sees room for improvement. “I don’t think I’m quite there yet,” said the 23-year-old phenom. “But I’m getting to that stage where I’m thinking, ‘This is what I should be doing. I should be lifting a trophy at the end of the week.’ It’s been great. The last four, five weeks have been incredible, some of the best golf that I’ve ever played.”

Even Tiger’s impressed. “Rory is putting on a show out there,” said Tiger after Sunday’s final round. “Right now he’s just really played well, and he’s making a ton of putts. That’s a great combo.”
