Rasmus Aides Cardinals to Win Over Royals

Colby Rasmus hit his 15th homerun of the season the season in the fourth inning to lead the Cardinals to a 5-3 win over their state rival Kansas City Royals.

Rasmus hit a homerun off Kansas City starter Kyle Davies to score Nick Stavinoha and Matt Holliday to give St. Louis a 3-0 lead. Skip Schumaker also hit a homerun in the fifth to push the lead to 5-0. Kansas City scored two runs in the sixth, and added a single tally in the eighth to push the game to 5-3, which is where it stayed.

Blake Hawksworth picked up the win for the Cardinals, and moved his season record to 2-4. Hawksworth left in the sixth inning, after a failed double play, where the Royals started the inning with two runners on base. Hawksworth finished with five innings, two hits, two runs, with just one earned.

Rasmus, along with Aaron Miles had two hits on the night. All together, St. Louis picked up eight hits on the day. Kansas City saw Mike Aviles pick up two hits, and David DeJesus with three. Jose Guillen pushed his season long hit streak to 20 games with a RBI single in the 8th inning.

St. Louis moves to 41-33 overall, and 18-21 on the road this season. St. Louis still remains ½ game behind Cincinnati for first place in the MLB National League Central. Kansas City falls to 31-44 overall and 15-20 at home. The Royals remain in fourth place in the American League Central.

Jaime Garcia (7-3) will take on Bruce Chen (3-2) for the final game of a three game series on Sunday afternoon.
