It was announced on Sept. 2nd that the Portuguese Anti-doping Authority (AdoP) handed a six-month suspension to national tram manager Carlos Queiroz after the agency ruled he had disrupted an anti-doping procedure before the World Cup this summer in South Africa. Portugal made it to the second round and were then eliminated by eventual champions Spain.

Queiroz is currently serving a one-month ban already that was dished out by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) due to the same offence during a World Cup training camp that was held in May. He was also fined €1,000 after he was judged to have acted in an aggressive manner towards the drug testers.

But the Portuguese Sports Institute held an inquiry and then added some time on to the punishment and sent the FPF the ruling as the FPF is Queiroz’s employer. The 57-year-old manager was set to miss out on Portugal’s first two Euro 2012 qualification games against Cyprus and Norway in early September and will now be forced to sit out two more qualifiers in October when they play Denmark and Iceland. However, Queiroz plans to appeal the suspension with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Queiroz made a statement through his lawyers earlier in the week which said: “According to some reports, the ADoP has found proof – unlike the disciplinary committee of FPF – of breach and disturbance of anti-doping activity and has determined a six-month sentence. As for me, what matters is not the decision, but the lack of any wrongdoing (as was recognised by the FPF). So I confirm that I will appeal this decision to the right institutions, namely to the CAS. I will request, based on the statutory rules of CAS, that the decision be suspended until the appeal is heard.”

It’s not exactly sure at the moment what Qeuiroz did, other than make it hard for the dope testers to carry out their job.
