Panthers Like Cam Newton With First Pick?

Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton will be showing off for NFL teams at Auburn’s Pro Day on Tuesday, and the Carolina Panthers and their new head coach Ron Rivera will be there. The Panthers have the first pick in April’s draft, quarterbacks Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen showed little promise for Carolina last season, and Rivera has gushed about Newton.

So will Cam Newton go No. 1? The Charlotte Observer’s Darin Gantt thinks the Panthers are locked in on Cam. “[Rivera] must be going there for a reason,” said Gantt. “I think they were so set on [Stanford quarterback] Andrew Luck coming out, they’re not going to wait. They need a quarterback.”

“Look at Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco — Cam has got those types of physical attributes,” Rivera said at the recent NFL combine. “He’s a tall, powerful young man. He’s got great athletic ability. He might be the best athlete of all of them. Again, the one thing he does have is a great arm and he’s a winner.”

Newton completed just 11-of-21 passes at the combine, but should look a lot better on Tuesday. He led Auburn to the national championship last season while throwing for 30 touchdowns and running for 20 scores.
