Although forward Andrew Wiggins was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers out of the University of Kansas with the first overall pick in this year’s NBA draft, it looks like he’s not going to set foot on a basketball court with the team. This is because the Cavaliers have already agreed to trade him to the Minnesota Timberwolves for forward Kevin Love. Cleveland will be sending Love to the Timberwolves along with a 2015 first-round draft choice and Anthony Bennett.

However, while both clubs have come to an agreement over the trade, they can’t officially announce the deal until August 23 since NBA rules state Wiggins can’t be traded until at least a month after signing his contract. Either team can pull out of the deal up until that point. In addition, the trade could also become bigger with more players or teams getting involved in it.

Rumours have been circulating that Minnesota has been talking with the Philadelphia 76ers since they’re interested in acquiring the services of 26-year-old forward Thaddeus Young to try to replace the void left by the departure of Love. It’s believed the Timberwolves would trade the first-round pick they receive for the 25-year-old Love and use it to try to acquire Young.

When, and if the trade goes down, Love will be united with Kyrie Irving and superstar LeBron James and the Cavaliers will become one of the favourites to take the 2014/15 NBA title. The 29-year-old James recently re-signed with Cleveland as a free agent after leaving the Miami Heat. He originally left the Cavaliers a few seasons ago to join Miami, bit has now returned to try and help Cleveland win their first championship in 50 years. James won a pair of titles with the Heat and went to four consecutive final series.

Wiggins, who hails from Vaughn, Ontario, near Toronto, has been mentioned as trade bait for Love for the past several weeks. Love, who is a three-time all star, has the choice of opting out of his contract next year and he let Minnesota know that’s what he plans on doing. He’s been with Minnesota for the last six years and the club has failed to make the playoffs in that time. Love enjoyed a fine season in 2013/14 as he scored an average of 26.1 points per game and added 12.5 rebounds along with 4.4 assists per contest.

Cleveland hasn’t made the postseason since James took off in 2010, but with him and Love in the lineup they shouldn’t have a problem reaching the playoffs next season. As for Minnesota, the arrival of Wiggins will usher in a new era for the team. Wiggins is rated as an excellent defensive player with a lot of potential offensively. In addition, Bennett also has a lot of upside. He was the top pick in last year’s draft and like Wiggins, comes from Toronto. He struggled with injuries in his rookie season last year, but has been impressive during the current summer league in Las Vegas.
