Martin Kaymer of Germany claimed the World No. 1 ranking just by reaching Sunday’s final of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, knocking Lee Westwood of England down to No. 2 in the world. But Kaymer was no match for another Englishman, Luke Donald, who beat the German 3 and 2 and never trailed in any of his six matches this week.

Donald moved past Tiger Woods and up to No. 3 in the world with the victory, his first on American soil in five years. Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell, who won two matches to reach the round of 16, also moved past Tiger Woods to No. 4 in the world. Tiger, who lost his first round match to Thomas Bjorn, is now No. 5 in the world.

That means Europe can boast the top four golfers in the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time since 1992, when Ian Woosnam, Sir Nick Faldo, Jose Maria Olazábal and Seve Ballesteros held the top four spots.

Kaymer is the fourteenth golfer to claim the World No. 1 ranking in the 24-year history of the OWGR. Westwood lasted 17 weeks in the top spot, longer than Fred Couples, David Duval, Ernie Els, Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman.

Is Kaymer deserving of the top spot? I don’t really think so. He was gifted his only major title, last year’s PGA Championship, and he’s rewarded for his performance in the Match Play, an event that’s heavily influenced by the luck of the draw.
