Mets Santana Solid In Second Spring Start

Considering that he missed all of the 2011 season after a 2010 shoulder surgery, pitcher Johan Santana making two decent spring training starts is a cause for celebration for the New York Mets. On Sunday, Santana pitched 2.2 innings in a rain-shortened pretend game against the Miami Marlins, allowing no earned runs for the second straight pretend game.

Santana saw some progress but knows he’s still got a long road back to pitching in meaningful games. “I feel really good,” said Santana after his latest exhibition appearance. “I was able to throw more breaking balls and changeups today … I think once we get up to 80-90 pitches and do it every five days, that is when we say we are good.”

Mets manager Terry Collins was willing to talk even more optimisticly, saying ““I truly believe that we will get this right and Johan Santana will be on this team opening day.”

Santana threw 42 pitches on Sunday, 22 for strikes. The plan is for him to go over 50 pitches in his next scheduled pretend outing, Friday against the Detroit Tigers, and eventually get into the 85-90 range by the end of camp. But Santana isn’t even taking his next exhibition for granted. “Now we’re on schedule,” said the one-time ace. “I’m going one start at a time, trying to build up from there. But if I’m ready for it, I’ll be out there.”
