The 2010 Minnesota Vikings were full of stories of getting old and collapsing. There was quarterback Brett Favre in various scandals, getting knocked out of games, seeing his NFL record streak of starts end. But the most stunning visuals came from the collapse of the roof of the Metrodome, forcing one Vikings home game to be played in Detroit and another outside at the University of Minnesota.

The Vikings really want to move out of the 30-year-old Metrodome, but they’ll be there for at least one more year, and the stadium commission has voted unanimously to install a new 10-acre cover of Teflon-coated fiberglass at the Dome. The total cost is expected to be around $19 million, but insurance will cover all but a $25,000 deductible. Good thing the Metrodome paid its $260,000 insurance premium last year.

The plan is to have the new roof done by August 1, two weeks before the Vikings are scheduled to play their first home preseason game. The Vikings are already working on a contingency plan to move preseason home games to the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium. That would hurt the Vikings financially, probably more because the stadium doesn’t sell beer than because it has 13,000 fewer seats than the Metrodome.

Meanwhile, the Vikings want a new stadium that should cost around $900 million. They’d really like the state to kick in $40-$60 million a year to pay for it, and are now suggesting that money from state lottery tickets with the Vikings logo on them be used to help pay for their new stadium.
