The Los Angeles Dodgers are finally scoring runs and Andre Ethier is closing in on the longest April hitting streak in Major League Baseball history. Clearly, this is because new Dodger manager Don Mattingly has finally inched back towards his facial hair roots with a salt and pepper goatee that his wife reportedly hates. For now at least, Mattingly says he won’t shave.

On Sunday, the Dodgers won for the sixth time in their last eight games, beating the Chicago Cubs 7-3 at historic Wrigley Field. The Dodgers (12-11) were scoring only 3.2 runs per game through their first 18 contests of the season, but have averaged 7.6 runs per game in their last five outings.

Andre Ethier extended his hitting streak to 21 games during Sunday’s win. Only former Dodgers manager Joe Torre has ever had a longer April hitting streak (22 in 1972), so Ethier just needs hits in his next two games to gain a bit of April immortality.

Mattingly says he’s willing to stand up to his wife and keep his goatee for the good of the team — at least until the end of his squad’s road trip. “It stays for a couple more days,” said the man once known as Donnie Baseball. “I have at least 10 more days until I see Lori again.”
