It seems like former manager Diego Maradona isn’t taking his sacking from the national team lightly as he’s going down swinging, especially against Argentina Football Association (AFA) president Julio Grondona and the director of national teams Carlos Bilardo.

Maradona, who was let go from the job earlier in the week, claimed on July 29, that he was betrayed and lied to by the AFA. He said that Grondona gave him an ultimatum which he knew Maradona wouldn’t accept as a way to force him out of the manager’s post. It’s believed that Grondona asked Maradona to fire his coaching staff.

The 49-year-old Maradona read from a prepared statement to the media and basically said Grondona lied to him and Bilardo betrayed him.  He said that after the humiliating 4-0 loss to Germany in the World Cup in South Africa that Grondona told him he was happy with Maradona’s work and wanted him continue.

He added when they got back to Argentina, Grondona had changed his tune slightly and said seven members of the coaching staff should be let go.  But Maradona said Grondona knew he wouldn’t agree to that and was essentially forced out of the job.

Maradona took over from Alfio Basile in October 2008 and barely made the World Cup. Argentina won their first four games and then lost to Germany in the quarterfinals. In fact, they haven’t got past the quarterfinals stage since 1990. It’s believed that Estudiantes manager Alejandro Sabella and Racing Club manager Miguel Angel Russo are two of the leading candidates to take over from Maradona.

However, Maradona warned his successor by saying that whoever takes over the job should know that treason is close by as some people aren’t in it for the good of Argentinean football, they’re only interested in padding their bank accounts and personal interests.

Maradona finished by saying he has given everything possible for the Argentina shirt and the country’s football deserves to be better taken care of and in a better position than it currently is.
