With the luck he’s been having lately, sports bettor Dave Oancea should probably drop by the nearest store and pick up a lottery ticket. However, he doesn’t really need the money at the moment. Oancea has raked in close to $2.75 million dollars in the past couple of weeks on sports betting. He took home about $2.5 million by backing the Kansas City Royals to capture the World Series and then won another $240,000 by betting on Holly Holm to upset Ronda Rousey for the women’s bantamweight title in their UFC showdown on November 14th.

Oancea said he was going to bet just $10,000 on Holm, but then decided to double up and lay down $20,000 on the 12-1 underdog. It was a good move since the 35-year-old preacher’s daughter knocked Rousey out cold in the second round of their UFC 193 tilt in Melbourne, Australia. The odds on Holm dropped to 8-1 just before fight time, but Oancea made his wager earlier at 12/1. Holm, who’s now 10-0, stopped the previously undefeated Rousey (12-1) with a well-placed kick to the head which was followed up by several painful punches.

The gambler said he wasn’t really betting on Holm to win as much as he was wagering on Rousey to lose. He said he was going to wager $10,000 for the fun of it because he assumed Rousey would eventually lose, the same way Mike Tyson did to 40/1 underdog Buster Douglas in Tokyo 25 years ago. His reward: $2,457,200. A few weeks earlier Oancea won $2,457,200 on the Royals in the World Series. However, technically he didn’t do it on just one bet.

According to Oancea, he started making wagers on Kansas City back in April when the MLB season began and it took a total of 26 bets to win the money. He figures he ended up wagering approximately $100,000 on the Royals to win close to $2.5 million with his bets ranging from a low of $500 to a high of $25,000. He explained, “No sports book is going to take a $100,000 to win $3 million. It’s too much of a liability. So they let you put $20,000 to win $600,000. And then they moved the line from 30 to 1 to 25 to 1 and then I’d do $10,000 at 25 to 1.”

He made the wagers at several different sports books that take high stakes and saw the odds on the Royals quickly drop from 30/1 to 6/1. Once the World Series got underway, Oancea had the opportunity to hedge the wager and back the Mets for a shot at $1.25 million, but decided against it. He believed the Royals were a stronger team because of their bullpen and was right on the money in his assessment of them.
