Latos Sets MLB Record, Keeps Padres in First Place

Apparently an extra day’s rest was all Mat Latos needed to recover from “stabbing” pains in his stomach. Latos allowed only one run over seven innings, as the Padres beat the Dodgers for the second straight night to stay one game ahead of the Giants in the NL West. Latos also became the first pitcher in Major League history to allow two runs or fewer in 15 straight appearances (of a minimum of five innings).

Two other pitchers had 14-game streaks — Greg Maddux in 1993-1994, and Mike Scott in 1986. Latos claimed he wasn’t aware of his accomplishment until after the game. “I didn’t know about [the record] — it’s great to be able to set a record, but my career’s not going to be defined as setting one record,” said the second-year pitcher. “My career’s going to be defined on my reliability.”  Sounds like the 22-year-old Latos has his whole career planned out.

Latos also saw his ERA drop to 2.21, which is the best in the bigs this season. The Padres had lost 10 games in a row before winning their last two.  The Dodgers have struggled mightily since letting Manny Ramirez leave, and have lost eight of their last 10.

The Padres and Giants start a crucial four-game set in San Diego on Thursday.  Tonight, the Padres send out rookie Cory Luebke to face Dodgers ace Chad Billingsley in the final game of a three-game series.  For the Giants, Barry Zito takes the hill in Arizona as the Giants try to complete a sweep of the Diamondbacks against Daniel Hudson.
