Jets Trounce Jaguars 32-3, But Still Don’t Look That Great

The New York Jets improved to 2-0 on Sunday with a lopsided 32-3 home victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, but quarterback Mark Sanchez threw two interceptions and struggled to lead the offense, converting only 3 of 12 third downs. Sanchez finished the day completing 17 of his 24 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

“You can’t give them two cheap throws,” said a disappointed Sanchez, who blamed his two picks for the Jets taking only a 15-3 lead into halftime. “We should’ve been up 29-3 … in the first half if I don’t turn it over. We’ve got to put an emphasis on penalties and turnovers because they’re drive-killers. . . . We need to be real sharp on the road.” The Jets rallied for a come-from-behind win at home against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, but will now face three straight road games, culminating in a Week 5 showdown with the New England Patriots.

Perhaps the brightest spot for the Jets offensively was scoring a first-quarter offensive touchdown, something they hadn’t done in 16 straight games. On the opening drive of the game, Sanchez led the Jets 65 yards in six plays, capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes.

“There was one streak we wanted to break and that’s it, the first-quarter struggling offensively,’’ said Jets coach Rex Ryan. “That’s really a team deal and a team start. It was great to see them respond. When we tighten things up, not making communications mistakes, we’re tough to beat.’’

The Jets defense allowed only 203 total yards to the Jaguars defense, intercepting Jaguars starter Luke McCown four times before he was benched in favor of rookie Blaine Gabbert.
