Ice hockey history was made on Sunday, December 27th when Shannon Szabados became the first female goaltender to ever post a shutout in a male professional league. Szabados is well known in her homeland of Canada as she led the country to a gold medal at the Olympic Games in 2010 in Vancouver, British Columbia and again in 2014 in Sochi, Russia. The 29-year-old has been playing in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) for the past three seasons as a member of the Columbus Cottonmouths.

The young lady from Edmonton, Alberta turned aside a total of 33 shots in the game against the Huntsville Havoc for a 3-0 victory and a place in the history books. Szabados has appeared in a dozen games with the Cottonmouths so far this season and has a save percentage of 90.9 to go along with her goals-against average of 3.58. The SPHL isn’t the biggest North American men’s pro league, but it’s still quite an accomplishment for Szabados to make the Columbus squad and to then record a shutout. This is especially true considering he’s just 5-feet-9-inches tall and weighs less than 150 lbs.

Women’s hockey is becoming more popular across the continent with the CWHL league and the birth of the NWHL this season. However, Szabados has made a name for herself for years by competing against men. She played college hockey for several seasons in a men’s league and also has a history of being the first woman to play in several different leagues and tournaments over the years. Szabados was the first woman to play in the junior Western Hockey League (WHL) in Canada when she suited up for the Tri-City Americans in pre-season games.

She was also the first female in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) where she managed to post a shutout in her very first outing and was named the league’s best goaltender for the 2006/07 campaign. In addition, Szabados was named the top goalie at the 2010 Olympics and was chosen to the tournament’s All-Star team. She became the first female to win a game in the SPHL when she made 34 saves back on November 21st of 2014 when Columbus edged the Fayetteville FireAntz in overtime by a score of 5-4.
Szabados played just two games for Columbus in the 2013/14 season and lost both of them. But once she got used to the league she managed to turn things around by losing just nine times last season in her 25 games. She also finished the season with a fine 3.12 goals-against average and a save percentage of 90.7.
