2011 NFL Predictions & Preview: New Orleans Saints 11-5

With the NFL regular season fast approaching, we at SportsUntapped are taking our crystal balls out of storage and examining each team’s full 16-game schedule to prognosticate how the 2011 season will play out. We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints, a team only a year removed from a Super Bowl title.

New Orleans Saints

Last year’s record: 11-5.

Vegas Over/Under on 2011 Regular Season Wins: 10.

First four games:
Sept. 8 at Green Bay, 8:30 p.m.
Sept. 18 Chicago, 1 p.m.
Sept. 25 Houston, 1 p.m.
Oct. 2 at Jacksonville, 1 p.m.

The Saints ended their Super Bowl defense in humiliating fashion, losing on Wild Card weekend to the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks. They face three pretty good teams to start the year, and most likely will need an easy win in Jacksonville to get to 2-2.

Red Sox Retake First After Second Straight Rout of Rangers

After winning and scoring double digit runs for the second straight night on Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox are in sole possession of first place in the American League East for the first time since August 14. The New York Yankees fell a game back after losing at home to the Oakland A’s for the second straight night, this time thanks to ex-Red Sox Coco Crisp’s second home run of the night in the 10th inning.

Legendary Red Sox slugger David Ortiz set the tone early by scoring all the way from first on Carl Crawford’s double, running through third base coach Tom Bogar. The throw beat Ortiz to the plate by several feet, but Texas Rangers catcher Mike Napoli dropped the ball with Papi’s ponderous frame bearing down on him. “He felt the earthquake coming in,’’ said Ortiz, who was returning from missing nine games with bursitis in his right heel.

2011 NFL Predictions & Preview: Seattle Seahawks 6-10

With the NFL regular season fast approaching, we at SportsUntapped are taking our crystal balls out of storage and examining each team’s full 16-game schedule to prognosticate how the 2011 season will play out. We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: the defending NFC West champion Seattle Seahawks.

Seattle Seahawks

Last year’s record: 7-9.

Vegas Over/Under on 2011 Regular Season Wins: 6.5.

First four games:
Sept. 11 at San Francisco, 4:15 p.m.
Sept. 18 at Pittsburgh, 1 p.m.
Sept. 25 Arizona, 4:15 p.m.
Oct. 2 Atlanta, 4:05 p.m.

Last season’s unlikely run to becoming the first division winner in NFL history with a losing record began with a home blowout of the 49ers. The first win of the Tavaris Jackson era in Seattle could come in Week 1 in San Francisco, but it will likely have to wait until Week 3 at home against Arizona. I’m seeing a 1-3 start for the Seahawks.

Miami Dolphins Sign Veteran Running Back Larry Johnson

The Miami Dolphins are a football team that has been desperately looking for a veteran quarterback to lead the offense and strike up some chemistry with Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall in order to make the offense that much more versatile. The one problem the Dolphins haven’t had over the past few years is in the running game. With veteran running backs like Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown leading the way, Miami has always had a solid ground game, but with those two free agents signing elsewhere the Dolphins have been looking for viable replacements.

The first move the Miami Dolphins made to get their running game back on track was making a trade with the New Orleans Saints for former Heisman trophy winner Reggie Bush. Even though Bush hasn’t really lived up to all the hype he was given after being drafted out of USC by the Saints to be a feature back, the versatile running back has gotten the job done in different ways by becoming a great receiver.
