Hockey fans must have known something was amiss when television station WCBS in New York listed the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs as winners on June 18 as I don’t think the Leafs have played in June in the club’s history. The Leafs were pathetic again this season and were on the golf course after it ended while 16 of the other 29 squads battled it out in the playoffs. The Leafs managed a grand total of 68 points out of a possible 164 to finish 27th in the 30-team league. The only teams that posted a worse record were the Buffalo Sabres, Arizona Coyotes, and Edmonton Oilers.

However, WCBS posted a graphic on June 8 which listed the NHL’s Leafs beating the New York Mets of Major League baseball by a score of 7-1. Leafs’ fans and the team itself jumped all over the mistake and numerous tweets were sent out making fun of it. Of course, the poor guy working at the station placed the wrong team and graphic on the nightly sportscast as it was actually the Toronto Blue Jays who hammered the Mets.

Whoever, made the mistake shouldn’t feel too bad though, since somebody made a bigger one a couple of days earlier by listing the Chicago Bears NFL team as the winners of the 2014/15 Stanley Cup. Of course, it was the Chicago Blackhawks who won the cup for the third time in the past six seasons when they beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games on June 15. This blunder came courtesy of the Korea Times as the paper’s headlines read, “Chicago Bears clinch Stanley Cup.”

The English version of the newspaper apologized for the error after thousands of readers pointed it out. The Hawks clinched the cup at home for the first time since the 1937/38 NHL campaign with a 2-0 win over the Lightning at the United Center. Ironically, the cup wasn’t present at the rink when they Hawks clinched their title against the Maple Leafs in 1938 in game four as league officials didn’t think they’d win it. The team eventually got their hands on the trophy in a separate ceremony later on.

There was a bit of déjà vu on June 15 when the Hawks beat Tampa as the Stanley Cup wasn’t in the building there either as it was stuck n traffic due to storms in the area. The Hawks celebrated on the ice for about 15 minutes before it eventually showed up.
