The Boston Celtics have more NBA titles than any other team in league history with an impressive 17 titles, but it looks like they might be on the verge of making it 18 as they have taken the 3-2 series lead in the NBA Finals over the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers.

Coming into game five of the NBA Finals, the series was all tied up at 2-2, but the Boston Celtics had a great chance of heading back to the Staples Center in Los Angeles with some much needed momentum by winning game five and their second straight game in the series.

Even though this series has been going back and forth in terms of dominance by sides, the Celtics seem to have taken control of this series after game five as the Lakers just had no answer for the Paul Pierce (team-high 27 points) and the Boston offense.

Throughout the entire postseason, the Celtics biggest asset has been their patent lockdown defense and ability to shutdown some of the best offenses in the NBA. The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Orlando Magic both had some extremely potent offenses this season, but stood almost no chance against the Boston Celtics defense as Rajon Rondo and company dominated and advanced to their second NBA Finals appearance in three years.

Heading into the NBA Finals, the Celtics knew they had their work cut out for them against Kobe Bryant and company, but were still confident they could beat their archrivals once again to win another NBA title. Despite their confidence, Boston was unable to play consistently well against the Lakers as the series lead was usually in the hands of Los Angeles.

Now the tables have turned as the defending champs will face elimination in game six on their home floor at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Even though the Lakers are already favored by -6.5 to win game six, if the Celtics play the way they did in game five and dominate the glass once again, Boston will win the NBA title for a record 18th time.

Kobe Bryant had a great game in game five with a game-high 38 points, but he was basically playing by himself as no other player on the Lakers could do anything offensively which is very reminiscent of their performance back in 2008 against the Celtics.

Despite almost being able to close the gap and take the lead, the Lakers went down for the second straight game 92-86.
