The St. Louis Cardinals won Game One of the World Series, beating the suddenly punchless Texas Rangers 3-2 on the strength of a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Rangers, who have hit so well in the first two rounds of the playoffs the last two years, managed just six hits, with all their runs coming on a two-run homer by catcher Mike Napoli.

The Game 1 power outage recalls last year’s Rangers team that hit just .190 in the World Series, losing in five games to the San Francisco Giants. “Last year’s World Series is completely out of our memory bank,” said Rangers designated hitter  Michael Young after his 0-for-4 Game One on Wednesday. “That has nothing to do with what we’re doing now.”

Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter pitched six strong innings before being taken out for pinch hitter Allen Craig to come in and get the eventual game-winning hit. Rangers pitcher C.J. Wilson was upset with his results, and perhaps the fact that he’s now lost the All-Star Game (which gave the Cardinals home-field advantage in the World Series), the first game of the playoffs, and the first game of the World Series. “It stinks,” said Wilson. “I don’t work all year to have these negative press conferences afterwards.”

Rangers reliever Alexi Ogando said he made the pitch he wanted on Craig’s pinch-hit single. “That’s where I wanted to locate the pitch,” the pitcher said. “Give credit to the hitter. It was tough to see that fall as a hit. Nelson Cruz made a good try to try and get it.”

Game Two is Thursday night in St. Louis, with the Rangers starting Colby Lewis and the Cardinals going with Jaime Garcia. The Rangers are favored to win Thursday, with money lines having them between -112 and -124 favorites.
