Alexander Semin scored 48 seconds into overtime to give the visiting Washington Capitals a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers on Sunday, moving the Capitals past the Tampa Bay Lightning and back into first place in the Southeast Division for the first time since January 17. The Caps, winners of four straight, play the Lightning in Tampa on Monday night.

The Capitals have won four straight, their longest winning streak since the last week of November. Washington goaltender Michal Neuvirth made 32 saves to earn his 22nd victory of the year, a Caps rookie record.

Boyd Gordon gave the Capitals their first lead midway through the second period, snapping a personal 27-game scoring drought. Nicklas Backstrom scored Washington’s first goal with an assist from superstar Alexander Ovechkin, who has had at least one point in every game of the Caps winning streak.

“Hopefully this winning streak can give us the confidence we need for the upcoming games,” said Backstrom. “We’re looking forward now and we have to be focused, especially since we have to play tomorrow in Tampa.”

The Panthers lost their fifth in a row, a season-high, and were beaten by a goal in the first minute of overtime for the second straight night. Florida is in 13th place in the Eastern Conference and 11 points behind Buffalo for the final playoff spot.
