Monday night in Pittsburgh, the Washington Capitals beat the Penguins for the third straight time. For the second straight game, Caps goalie Michael Neuvirth shut out the injury-plagued Pens, and the biggest star on the ice, Alexander Ovechkin scored the game’s only goal to give Washington a 1-0 victory over their biggest rivals.

The Penguins have been outscored by the Capitals 7-1 in the three losses, and have gone 157 minutes and 47 seconds without scoring against the Caps. The Penguins outshot the Caps 18-7 in the first period, but Neuvirth stopped all 39 shots he faced in the game. Both the goaltender and Caps coach Bruce Boudreau said those early shots helped Neuvirth establish a rhythm. “Early in the game, when they were coming at us really hard he was not allowing any rebounds,” said Boudreau. “He can corral them and smother them like he has Velcro on him, that is when I know Michal is on top of his game. He was seeing everything.”

Ovechkin scored the game’s only goal on a power play late in the second period, blasting a slap shot past Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. How hard was the shot? “I didn’t even see it in the replay,” Boudreau said. Ovie now has seven points in his last six games.

The Capitals (32-19-10) are now just one point behind the Tampa Bay Lightning for the Southeast Division lead. The Penguins (36-20-5) are now six points behind the Philadelphia Flyers in the Atlantic Division, but hope a trade they made before Monday’s game will turn things around. Pittsburgh acquired left wing James Neal from the Dallas Stars. Neal has 21 goals this season and the Penguins hope he’ll be able to score for them too because none of the Penguins who took the ice in Monday’s loss have scored more than 12 goals this season.
