Can the Celtics Upset the Cavs?

Coming into this second round matchup between two Eastern Conference heavyweights, the Cleveland Cavaliers were extremely confident that they could make easy work of the Boston Celtics and advance the Eastern Conference finals once again to face the Orlando Magic in a rematch of last season.

Even though many people agreed with the fact that the Cavs would almost certainly beat the Celtics in five or six games, the boys from Boston are giving LeBron James and company all they can handle. The one big difference between these two teams in my opinion is defense.

Over the last three seasons or so, the Boston Celtics have been one of the best defensive teams in the league both inside the paint and on the perimeter. With great defenders in the paint like Kendrick Perkins and Kevin Garnett the Cavs have struggled to penetrate and perhaps the biggest advantage on defense that the Celtics have in this series is Rajon Rondo in the backcourt.

Game three of this series was a massacre to say the least as the Cleveland Cavaliers absolutely dominated the Boston Celtics with an impressive performance from LeBron James, but game four was another story altogether as the Celtics were able to somewhat contain LeBron and tied up the series with a convincing win.

Now the series heads back to Quicken Loans Arena, where the Cleveland Cavaliers are as tough to beat as any team in the league, but with Rajon Rondo’s huge triple-double performance in game four, I believe the Celtics have figured out a way to beat the Cavs.

Rajon Rondo might not get the recognition of say a Chris Paul, Deron Williams or a Steve Nash at the point guard position, but in my opinion, this kid is as good if not better than all three of the league’s best point guards above.

Not only does Rondo have the ability to put up a triple-double on any given night, but he is also arguably the best defensive point guard in the league and this season gotten some much needed recognition his play on the defensive end by being named to the NBA’s All-Defensive team with the likes of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Gerald Wallace and Dwight Howard.

This series will go the distance in my opinion, but if the Cavs can’t figure out a way to contain Rondo, I believe that the Celtics will advance to the Eastern Conference finals and LeBron James will have played his last game as a Cleveland Cavalier.
