On Monday night, the Colorado Avalanche broke their nine-game road losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild, who have now lost seven straight. The Avs fought back from two one-goal deficits before dominating the third period to get the win, and seemed to be energized by a big hit from forward Cody McLeod that knocked Minnesota’s Jared Spurgeon out of the game.

The hit earned McLeod a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct, and really ticked off Wild coach Mike Yeo. “I didn’t like the hit one bit,” Yeo complained. “On top of that, to me, it seemed like something they were targeting. They hit him from behind two shifts before that and I thought that one could have been called too.”

The long penalty kill served as something of a wakeup call for the Avalanche, who because of Christmas didn’t get into Minnesota until about six hours before game time. “Nobody likes to have two days off and then fly to Minnesota at 8 o’clock in the morning, have no morning skate and start to play a game,” explained Colorado’s Jan Hejda, who had the eventual game-winning goal at 10:20 of the third period. “That was pretty hard. Killing penalties, that gave us more confidence. That was kind of a warm up for some guys.”

The other big play of the game was Gabriel Landeskog’s goal with 62 seconds left in the second period that tied the game at 2-2. Avs goalie Semyon Varlamov made 20 saves to earn his first victory since December 13.
