How zoned is Boston Red Sox slugger Adrian Gonzalez? He homered on the last pitch he saw in Wednesday’s 13-2 win over the Texas Rangers, then homered on the first two pitches he saw in Thursday’s 6-0 win in Texas. Gonzalez also homered twice during Tuesday’s 11-5 win over Texas, giving him five homers in three games after hitting only one in his previous 181 at-bats.

“I hit them in spurts,” Gonzalez said of his recent power surge. “Everybody knows that. When I have a good swing, it’s just a feeling you have and you hit them in bunches.’’ Gonzalez is now hitting .348 with 23 home runs and 102 RBI in his first season with Boston.

David Ortiz also homered to extend his team lead to 25 home runs. It’s Papi’s eighth straight season with 25 or more homers, moving him past Jim Rice for the second longest streak in franchise history behind the 14-season streak of Ted Williams.

“The thing was they whupped our butts for three days,’’ said Rangers manager Ron Washington. “We couldn’t pitch to stop ’em and we couldn’t get anything going offensively. Their pitchers stopped us and we didn’t stop them.” Texas now has just a two-game lead in the AL West over the red-hot Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who come to Texas for a three-game series that starts Friday night.
