With the NFL regular season fast approaching, we at SportsUntapped are taking our crystal balls out of storage and examining each team’s full 16-game schedule to prognosticate how the 2012 season will play out. We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions, who’ll look to build on last year’s breakout success.

Last year’s record: 10-6
Vegas Over/Under on 2012 Regular Season Wins: 9

First four games:
Sep 9 St. Louis 1:00 pm
Sep 16 @San Francisco 8:20 pm
Sep 23 @Tennessee 1:00 pm
Sep 30 Minnesota 1:00 pm

Detroit’s toughest test in September certainly looks like the return match of last year’s coaching shovefest in Week 2. With two seemingly easy breezy home games, I see another fast start for the Lions with a 3-1 September.
Second four games:

Week 5 BYE
Oct 14 @Philadelphia 1:00 pm
Oct 22 @Chicago 8:30 pm
Oct 28 Seattle 1:00 pm
Nov 4 @Jacksonville 1:00 pm
I think the bye should help the Lions beat the Eagles, but they got blown out last year in Chicago and I see another tough loss this season. They should be able to bounce back with wins the next two weeks for a 6-2 record at midseason.

First four games of the second half:

Nov 11 @Minnesota 1:00 pm
Nov 18 Green Bay 1:00 pm
Nov 22 Houston 12:30 pm
Dec 2 Indianapolis 1:00 pm

The Lions swept the Vikings last season, but needed overtime in Minnesota and won by only six at home. I think the Lions will continue to have trouble getting over the hump against the Packers whose offense might just be too good on turf for the Lions to stop. The Texans could also provide some problems on Turkey Day, but the Colts game should be an easy win. I see two losses here for a 8-4 record heading into the final four games of the season.
Last four games:

Dec 9 @Green Bay 8:20 pm
Dec 16 @Arizona 4:05 pm
Dec 22 Atlanta 8:30 pm
Dec 30 Chicago 1:00 pm

Winning at Lambeau will also be very tough and the Lions couldn’t beat Atlanta at home last season. I see two more losses, but a 10-6 mark should be good enough to get the Lions back into the playoffs with another wild card berth.
