The 2011 World Series begins Wednesday night with a matchup that is as unlikely as it is unattractive for most of the country. The St. Louis Cardinals have home-field advantage and are favored to win Game 1 (-125) with their ace Chris Carpenter facing Texas Rangers ace C.J. Wilson, but the Cardinals are +135 underdogs to win the whole World Series.

Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols is the favorite to be named the 2011 World Series MVP at +500, with a trio of Rangers hitters close behind: Adrian Beltre and Nelson Cruz are at +600, while media darling Josh Hamilton is at +700.

Will the World Series be close and competitive? Oddsmakers expect at least one game to go to extra innings (-130), but the Series is more likely to end in four or five games (-180) than to go six or seven (+150). But they also really don’t expect a sweep by either team (+550).

The most likely outcome by the odds is the Rangers winning in five or six games (+400). The most likely way the Cardinals would win the Series is in seven games (+475).  Here are the odds for all the possible outcomes:

  • Rangers in Five +400
  • Rangers in Six +400
  • Rangers in Seven +450
  • Cardinals in Seven +475
  • Cardinals in Six +550
  • Rangers Sweep +800
  • Cardinals in Five +850
  • Cardinals Sweep +1800
