With the NFL regular season fast approaching, we at SportsUntapped are taking our crystal balls out of storage and examining each team’s full 16-game schedule to prognosticate how the 2011 season will play out. We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: the Washington Redskins, thought by most to be the fourth-best team in the NFC East.

Washington Redskins

Last year’s record: 6-10.

Vegas Over/Under on 2011 Regular Season Wins: 6.5.

First four games:
Sept. 11 N.Y. Giants, 4:15 p.m.
Sept. 18 Arizona, 1 p.m.
Sept. 26 at Dallas, 8:30 p.m.
Oct. 2 at St. Louis, 1 p.m.

Last season, the Redskins began the Shanahan era with a Week 1 upset of the Cowboys. With no starting quarterback named going into the final preseason game, a repeat may seem unlikely, but the Giants could be vulnerable. Even starting the year with four straight teams that didn’t make the playoffs last year, it’s hard to see the Redskins getting off to a good start or beating half-decent teams on the road. I’m expecting a 1-3 start.

Second four games:
Oct. 9 BYE
Oct. 16 Philadelphia, 1 p.m.
Oct. 23 at Carolina, 1 p.m.
Oct. 30 Buffalo at Toronto, 4:05 p.m.
Nov. 6 San Francisco, 1 p.m.

A bye week probably isn’t enough for the Redskins to contain Michael Vick much better than they did last year when he torched them for 56 points. But they can probably win two of the next three against pretty inferior competition to get to 3-5 at the halfway point.

First four games of the second half:
Nov. 13 at Miami, 1 p.m.
Nov. 20 Dallas, 1 p.m.
Nov. 27 at Seattle, 4:05 p.m.
Dec. 4 N.Y. Jets, 1 p.m.

The schedule gets a little tougher here, although only the Jets had a winning record last year. Still I can’t see the Redskins winning in Seattle or beating the Jets, so they’ll probably only get one win in this stretch and be out of contention at 4-8 heading into the final four weeks of the season.

Last four games:
Dec. 11 New England, 1 p.m.
Dec. 18 at N.Y. Giants, 1 p.m.
Dec. 24 Minnesota, 1 p.m.
Jan. 1 at Philadelphia, 1 p.m

Donovan McNabb will hardly get a hero’s welcome on Christmas Eve as he returns to Washington. The Redskins should win that contest, but probably none of the others, for a pretty disappointing 5-11 mark.
