2011 NFL Predictions & Preview: Dallas Cowboys 10-6

With the NFL regular season fast approaching, we at SportsUntapped are taking our crystal balls out of storage and examining each team’s full 16-game schedule to prognosticate how the 2011 season will play out. We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys, who’ll look to rebound from last year’s injuries and failures.

Dallas Cowboys

Last year’s record: 6-10.

Vegas Over/Under on 2011 Regular Season Wins: 9.

First four games:
Sept. 11 at N.Y. Jets, 8:20 p.m.
Sept. 18 at San Francisco, 4:05 p.m.
Sept. 26 Washington, 8:30 p.m.
Oct. 2 Detroit, 1 p.m.

After missing the last half of last season with a neck injury, Tony Romo will face a stiff test in his first game back against the Jets in primetime. After that the schedule gets a lot lighter, and it’s easy to see the Cowboys 3-1 after four games.

Second four games:
Oct. 9 BYE
Oct. 16 at New England, 4:15 p.m.
Oct. 23 St. Louis, 4:15 p.m.
Oct. 30 at Philadelphia, 8:20 p.m.
Nov. 6 Seattle, 1 p.m.

Even with the bye, upsetting the Patriots is probably too big a step for the Cowboys. Maybe they could steal a win in Philly, now that most of their players have Michael Vick’s autograph, but probably not. Safe bet is two wins to get to 5-3 at midseason.

First four games of the second half:
Nov. 13 Buffalo, 1 p.m.
Nov. 20 at Washington, 1 p.m.
Nov. 24 Miami, 4:15 p.m.
Dec. 4 at Arizona, 4:15 p.m.

A pretty easy start to the second half with four straight games against teams that had losing records last year — that should probably get Dallas three more wins and in contention at 8-4 through 12 games.

Last four games:
Dec. 11 N.Y. Giants, 8:20 p.m.-x
Dec. 17 at Tampa Bay, 8:20 p.m.
Dec. 24 Philadelphia, 4:15 p.m.
Jan. 1 at N.Y. Giants, 1 p.m.

I’d count on a split with the Giants and one other win for a 10-6 mark that should net the Cowboys the NFC’s last wild card spot.
