With the NFL regular season fast approaching, we at SportsUntapped are taking our crystal balls out of storage and examining each team’s full 16-game schedule to prognosticate how the 2011 season will play out. We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: the defending NFC South champion Atlanta Falcons.

Atlanta Falcons

Last year’s record: 13-3.

Vegas Over/Under on 2011 Regular Season Wins: 10.5.

First four games:
Sept. 11 at Chicago, 1 p.m.
Sept. 18 Philadelphia, 8:20 p.m.
Sept. 25 at Tampa Bay, 4:15 p.m.
Oct. 2 at Seattle, 4:05 p.m.

The Falcons had the NFC’s best regular season record a year ago, but that will be a tough act to follow. The Falcons are probably a better team than the Bears, Buccaneers and Seahawks, but maybe not by much. I see them 2-2 after this tough-ish opening stretch.

Second four games:
Oct. 9 Green Bay, 8:20 p.m.
Oct. 16 Carolina, 1 p.m.
Oct. 23 at Detroit, 1 p.m.
Oct. 30 BYE
Nov. 6 at Indianapolis, 1 p.m.

The Falcons are sure to be keyed up for the rematch with the Packers who bounced them out of the playoffs in the divisional round. The Panthers and Lions should be easy wins, but the Colts could give the Falcons some trouble, although coming off the bye should help. Still, I see three wins here to get Atlanta to 5-3 at the midpoint of the season.

First four games of the second half:

Nov. 13 New Orleans, 1 p.m.
Nov. 20 Tennessee, 1 p.m.
Nov. 27 Minnesota, 1 p.m.
Dec. 4 at Houston, 1 p.m.

The division should again come down to the Falcons and Saints, so their first meeting should be awfully good. Home games against the Titans and Vikings should be easy wins, but the Texans might have a chance at home. Should be another three wins here to get the Falcons to 8-4.

Last four games:

Dec. 11 at Carolina, 1 p.m.
Dec. 15 Jacksonville, 8:20 p.m.
Dec. 26 at New Orleans, 8:30 p.m.
Jan. 1 Tampa Bay, 1 p.m.

The Falcons shouldn’t have much trouble with the Panthers or Jags, and then win at least one of their last two against their tougher division rivals, which will get them to 11-5.
