San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito was in a car accident in Los Angeles less than 24 hours before the defending World Series champions open their regular season at Dodger Stadium. Zito is believed to be relatively unhurt, and as the team’s fourth starter coming out of spring training is scheduled to start Sunday night’s game against the Dodgers.
Zito’s car was broadsided at a West Hollywood intersection shortly before 8 pm on Wednesday night. Zito has a home close by in the Hollywood Hills. The pitcher went to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center “just to get checked out,” and was later released. Police determined he was not at fault in the accident, according to a LA County Sheriff’s spokesman.
The other driver was reportedly also uninjured, but Zito’s car has “major damage.”
Zito was left off the Giants postseason roster through all three rounds of the postseason last year, but is still making $18.5 million this year and is under contract through 2013. In four seasons with the Giants, he’s gone 40-57 with a 4.45 ERA.
