YouTube, owned by Google Inc., is in talks with the NHL, NBA, European soccer leagues and “most pro sports leagues” to stream live games on the YouTube website. YouTube already has a contract to show cricket matches from the Indian Premier League; last year those matches brought 55 million visits from 250 countries, so naturally the internet video king wants to expand.
How likely is it that YouTube will be streaming live NHL and NBA games in the United States? It’s probably a stretch because, as Business Insider points out, both leagues currently charge US customers almost $200 a year to stream lives games on the leagues’ websites. MLB has a similar pay subscription service in the US, but has already made a deal with YouTube to stream games for free in Japan.
While we’ll probably never see every NHL or NBA game available live and free on YouTube, it’s possible they may be able to show a game or two a week on a day that doesn’t compete with national television broadcasts. The NHL seems more likely.
“It’s fair to say that there will be a lot more appealing sports content you’ll see on YouTube,” Gautam Anand, Google’s director of content partnerships for Asia Pacific told Bloomberg. “We have ongoing conversations with pretty much everyone.”
Google wants visitors to stay on YouTube longer than the current average of 15 minutes. Cricket viewers stayed on YouTube for an average of 45 minutes and Google takes a cut of the advertising. But can they sell enough ads to make a real push at streaming mainstream sports leagues in the US?
