Wizards Take Wall with 1st Pick and Four Kentucky Players Follow in First Round

The speculation and anticipated is over as the first two rounds of the NBA Draft are officially over and in the books. There were no real surprises in the draft this time around as most players went where they were predicted to go like John Wall going number one to the Washington Wizards and Evan Turner going second to the Philadelphia 76ers, but the one surprise or milestone on Thursday night in New York was seeing five Kentucky Wildcats being selected in the first round.

Not only is this a remarkable feat for the Kentucky Wildcats basketball program and head coach John Calipari, who was present to see five of his players get drafted, but the majority of these players, if not all, will immediately make an impact on their new teams next season.

The first of the Kentucky Wildcats to get selected in the NBA Draft was John Wall, which was no surprise, at number one by the Washington Wizards, but only a few picks later at number five his running mate and center DeMarcus Cousins was selected by the Sacramento Kings.

After Cousins, the next Wildcat to get picked up was forward Patrick Patterson at 14th overall by the Houston Rockets. Unlike Wall and Cousins, it was uncertain where Patterson would go in the first round, but landing with the Rockets alongside Trevor Ariza, Aaron Brooks and Yao Ming could be ideal for the promising young forward.

Once Patterson was selected with the 14th pick in the draft, John Calipari didn’t have to wait long before seeing his fourth player make the jump to the professional level as point guard Eric Bledsoe was picked with the 18th pick by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Even though Bledsoe would have been a good backup behind Russell Westbrook in Oklahoma City, the Thunder traded his rights to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Finally, the last Kentucky Wildcat to be selected in the 2010 NBA Draft was center Daniel Orton with the 29th pick by the Orlando Magic. This officially set the record for the Kentucky Wildcats and was capped off a historic night for one of the best college basketball programs in the country.
