Who the Hell is Charlie Whitehurst?

The Seattle Seahawks may have found their quarterback of the future. His name is Charlie Whitehurst. Who?

The Chargers shipped their third-string signal caller to the Pacific Northwest in exchange for a second-round pick this April, and what is rumored to be a third-rounder next year. All for a guy who has yet to toss a pass in a meaningful game.

Great move for San Diego. Strange move for Seattle. I saw Whitehurst play college ball at Clemson. Honestly, he wasn’t bad. He stands tall in the pocket and has a decent enough arm. Consistency was his biggest problem, which is probably the reason why he never supplanted backup Billy Volek during his four years with the Chargers.

Dealing for Whitehurst is low risk, high reward. He only received a two-year commitment, so Seattle isn’t out that much cash if he flops. However, losing those two high draft picks could prove costly for a team that is rebuilding.

Best case scenario, Charlie does for the ‘Hawks what Jake Delhomme did for the Carolina Panthers. Worst case, he joins the likes of Rob Johnson and A.J. Feeley as inexperienced quarterbacks who did major face-plants after being acquired in trades. Something tells me he will turn out just fine.
