Which Rookie Quarterback Will Get Benched First? [Prop Bets]

Of the five rookie quarterbacks who made their NFL debut last week, only one started his career with a win — Robert Griffin III of the Redskins.  The Colts are all in on Number One pick Andrew Luck, so there’s no way he’ll be benched, but any of the other three might be told to grab some pine. So which rookie quarterback will be benched first?

Vegas says Russell Wilson of the Seahawks is the most likely, followed by Brandon Weeden of the Browns and then Ryan Tannehill of the Dolphins.

Your odds on who’ll be the first rookie quarterback to be benched (injuries don’t count):

  • Russell Wilson, Seahawks -125
  • Brandon Weeden, Browns +125
  • Ryan Tannehill, Dolphins +500

Wilson being the favorite makes sense, as much because the Seahawks invested so much in free agent Matt Flynn as because of Russell’s mediocre play in last Sunday’s 20-16 road loss in Arizona. In his debut, Wilson completed 18 of 34 passes, but for only 153 yards. He had one touchdown pass and one interception, and his longest completion went for 27 yards.  He also ran the ball eight times for 20 yards. This week he’ll make his first home start against the 1-0 Dallas Cowboys.

Weeden had an atrocious 5.1 quarterback rating in Cleveland’s 17-16 home loss to the Eagles. He completed 12 of 35 passes for 118 yards and threw four interceptions and no touchdowns.  His longest pass went for 24 yards, and he ran twice for 25 yards. You have to figure he can’t play much worse than that, but if Cleveland’s defense continues to keep games close, Colt McCoy might get back on the field for the Browns. Weeden will make his first road start on Sunday against the 0-1 Cincinnati Bengals.

Ryan Tannehill faced a tough defense in his first start at the Houston Texans, but his 39.0 quarterback rating was mostly the results of three interceptions.  He went 20 for 36 for 219 yards and no touchdowns, with a long completion of 34 yards. He’ll make his home debut on Sunday against the 0-1 Oakland Raiders, and with Matt Moore backing him up, he can be expected to have a longer leash than the other two — at least for now.
