World No. 1 Lee Westwood was off to a decent start through his first 15 holes during Thursday’s opening round of the Ballantine’s Championship in Seoul, South Korea, but then fell back to even par with a double bogey on the final hole. That left Westwood, who regained the top ranking with a win last week in Indonesia, six shots behind first round leader Damien McGrane of Northern Ireland, ranked No. 154 in the world.
Miguel Angel Jimenez and American Dustin Johnson were the biggest names on the leaderboard between McGrane and Westwood, with both stars four shots back and tied for 11th place. Ernie Els was a shot behind Westwood at 1-over, while Ian Poulter fought back from double bogeys on his first two holes to finish at 2-over. Y.E. Yang got off to a terrible start at 4-over.
Despite dropping from 3-under to even par over his final three holes, Westwood still feels like he’s in this tournament. “I’m still in contention,” said the World No. 1. “On the first 15 holes I played very nicely and gave myself a lot of chances without really making any putts.”
McGrane is coming off his best European Tour finish of the year, finishing T22 at last week’s China Open. “The fairways are generous, and just like last week, you make birdies on day one and keep going till the end of the tournament,” he said. “That’s what I started off doing, so hopefully I’ll do it at the end of the tournament.”
