England manager Fabio Capello’s job has been made a little bit more difficult as it appears some players aren’t interested in playing for him and the national team anymore. Manchester United fullback Wes Brown has joined goalkeeper Paul Robinson, defender Jamie Carragher, and striker Emile Heskey, and retired from international football just days ahead of England’s game against Hungary at Wembley.
The 30-year-old Brown, who debuted for the senior side in 1999, went to England’s team hotel on Aug. 8 to let Capello know he was packing the national team in, just a day after being named to the squad. The injury-prone defender earned just 22 caps for England over his 12-year international career with his last appearance for his country coming in March of 2010 in a friendly game against Egypt.
However, Capello didn’t pick Brown when he named his squad for this summer’s World Cup in South Africa and paid for that decision when Ledley King went down with an injury and Carragher was suspended for a game due to yellow cards.
Brown said that he put a lot of thought into his decision, but felt the time was right to bow out of the international game. He added that at his age, he feels it’s better to stand aside and let some of the younger players get a crack at making the team. It will also give him the chance to focus on his club career with United.
He said it’s been a privilege and an honour to have played for his country at every level, starting with the Under-15s and ending with the senior squad. He added that he’s always been proud to put on the England shirt and wished the team luck in the future.
The English FA said there hasn’t been a replacement called up to the team for Brown as Everton defender Phil Jagielka might move over to right back for the game against Hungary.
