English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur will be playing against Europe’s elite clubs for the first time in 48 years as they travel to Germany to take on SV Werder Bremen in the first match day of the European Champions League on Sept. 14.

The Group A game will take place at the Weserstadion and marks Spurs’ first European Cup game since 1961/62 when they lost to Portuguese club Benfica in the semi final stage. Bremen missed out on the competition last year, but made it the previous five years.

Both teams made the tournament by winning qualifying games this summer. Bremen finished third in the Bundesliga last season and squeaked by UC Sampdoria 5-4 on aggregate to qualify while Spurs ended up in fourth place in the Premier League last season and beat BSC Young Boys 6-3 to qualify.

Bremen has only played against English teams twice before and lost both games to English club Arsenal FC in UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 1999/2000. Spurs have played eight games in Germany against Bundesliga teams and have done pretty well with three wins and five losses.

However, they’ll be without sparkplug and striker Jermain Defoe who’s going to be out about three months with an ankle injury and Michael Dawson is out with a knee injury. Ledley King as usual is also injured. It’s been reported that Spurs manager Harry Redknapp may abandon the 4-4-2 and send out a more defensive lineup. However, this is usually a mistake made by most English teams in the Champions League.

Even Man United fool around with their lineup and end up paying for it in the long run as they play to their opponents strengths instead of their own. This means even though Redknapp has a wealth of talent up front in Robbie Keane, Peter Crouch, Giovani dos Santos, and Roman Pavlyuchenko.

They’re solid in their own half too with Rafael van der Vaart, William Gallas, Gareth Bale, and Luka Modric. Goaltender Heurelho Gomes has a groin injury and Carlo Cudicini should get the start at Bremen.

For Bremen, Mertesacker has a fractured eye socket, Pizarro has a thigh injury and Naldo has an injured knee.  Spurs drew 1-1 at West Brom on the weekend and Bremen drew 0-0 at FC Bayern Munich.

If Redknapp tinkers with his formation, look for Bremen to win this game 2-1. However, if Spurs stick with two strikers, they should be able to pull out a 1-1 draw.

Sportsbook William Hill has the odds of a Werder Bremen listed at 6-5, with a draw at 12/5 and a Spurs win at 11/5. Werder Bremen to win 2-1 is 15/2 and a 1-1 draw is listed at 13/2.
