The Washington Capitals won the President’s Trophy for leading the NHL’s regular season standings after the 2015/16 campaign wrapped up on April 10th. The Capitals finished the season as the top team in the Metropolitan Division, Eastern Conference and the league with 120 points from a record of 56-18-8 in 82 games. The Capitals posted a record 29-8-4 at home and went a club-record 27-10-4 on the road. They scored 252 goals and allowed 192 against for a league-best difference of plus-59. The Dallas Stars had the next best record with 109 points and the St. Louis Blues posted 107 points.

The Capitals also had a couple of excellent individual seasons as Russian winger Alexander Ovechkin led the league in goals once again with 50 while goaltender Braden Holtby tied a league record with 48 wins in a season. Ovechkin managed to reach the 50-goal plateau by scoring a hat trick against the St. Louis Blues in his final appearance of the regular season. Holtby also reached his milestone in his final outing as both he and Ovechkin were rested for Washington’s 82nd and last regular-season encounter on April 10th.

Ovechkin has now scored at least 50 goals in a season seven times during his career. He’s just the third NHL player to ever score 50 goals on seven occasions with Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy being the other two. It was his third-straight year with at least 50 goals and Ovechkin is the first player in league history to score 50 times in three consecutive campaigns twice during a career. He achieved the feat for the first time between 2007 and 2010 and started his current streak in 2014. Ovechkin scored two hat tricks this season and now has 15 during his career. This ties him with Jaromir Jagr of the Florida Panthers for the most three-goal games among active players.

Holtby’s 48 wins by a goalie saw him tie the record that was originally set in the 2006/07 season by Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils. The previous record of 47 victories was set by Bernie Parent of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1973-74 season. Both Brodeur and Parent were in attendance when Holtby tied the mark and congratulated him after the game. Holtby finished the regular season with a record of 48-9-7 and won his 48 games in 66 appearances. Brodeur set the mark by playing 78 games in 2006/07.

Ovechkin added 21 assists to his league-leading 50 goals, which earned him the Rocket Richard Trophy as top goalscorer. He finished 15th overall in point scoring as Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks led the league with 106 points on 46 goals and 60 assists. Holtby finished the year with a 92.2 save percentage to tie for fourth place and a fifth-best goals-against average of 2.20 per game. The Capitals will now face the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL playoffs, which get underway on April 13th.
