Vikings-Bears Moving Outside; Favre Might Play

The Vikings will play outside in Minnesota for the first time in 29 years when they face the Bears on Monday Night Football. The University of Minnesota’s two-year-old TCF Bank Stadium will fill in for the Metrodome, which officials determined couldn’t be repaired in time for this week’s game after 17 inches of snow busted its roof and forced last week’s game to be moved to Detroit.

The Vikings lost their last outdoor home game 10-6 to the Kansas City Chiefs on December 20, 1981 at old Met Stadium. TCF Bank Stadium seats 50,000, about 13,000 fewer than the Metrodome, but the biggest hurdle to getting it ready for its NFL debut on Monday night is clearing out five feet snow drifts, which involves hiring hundreds of workers and may cost anywhere between $200,000 and $700,000.

Actually, the biggest hurdle might be that the college stadium has no beer taps. The Vikings have already been eliminated from the playoffs, and have nothing to play for except trying to knock out the first-place Bears. Are Vikings fans really hardy enough to brave extreme winter temperatures to sit and watch a three-hour game without beer?

Meanwhile, Vikings interim coach Leslie Frazier has no idea who he’ll start at quarterback on Monday night. Tavarius Jackson, who played in place of injured Brett Favre in Minnesota’s last game, has turf toe. Backup Joe Webb injured his hamstring two weeks ago. Frazier said the team was looking at signing one of eight free-agent quarterbacks, but he sounds like he hopes 41-year-old Favre will be able to play in the cold.

“We’re hoping to get him back,” said Frazier. “He had an ultrasound today just to check some of the nerve area in the shoulder and the neck and it was negative. We’ll see how he feels as the week goes on and just try to monitor that and hopefully it will get better for him as the week goes on.”
