On Wednesday, superstar quarterback Michael Vick signed his franchise tender, meaning he’ll return for another season with the Philadelphia Eagles. The team used its exclusive franchise tag on Vick to prevent him from leaving through free agency, and under the terms of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement that expires at 11:59 pm on Thursday, Vick is set to make between $16 and $20 million next season.
That’s a hefty and deserved raise for the heroic Vick, who less than two years after his unjust incarceration returned to dominate the NFL and put up the best numbers of his career in 2010, leading the mediocre Eagles to a division title. Vick earned just $5.25 million last year in the final year of a two-year contract.
Despite playing in just 12 regular season games last season, Vick set career highs in passing yards (3,018), touchdown passes (21) and rushing TDs (9). Now the Eagles just need to find people who are actually willing and able to block for him.
Vick’s 2011 salary will be based on the average of the five highest-paid quarterbacks from last season. That’s still a bit unfair to Vick who was clearly the best quarterback in the NFL despite having to heroically persevere and overcome the obstacles racist persecution put in his way.
