Superstar quarterback Michael Vick of the Philadelphia Eagles will be a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show in an episode airing Thursday, February 24. On Tuesday, the Eagles placed the franchise tag on Vick, who would otherwise have been able to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Vick will likely earn $15 to $20 million in 2010.
The franchise tag will be under dispute, however, if the NFL and NFLPA aren’t able to agree on a new labor deal before the current Collective Bargaining Agreement expires on March 3. If no deal is reached, all NFL contracts will be frozen. Vick earned $5.25 million in 2010 in the second year of a two-year deal, and finished second in the MVP voting.
As for the Oprah show, a statement says: “Among other topics, Vick will discuss his time spent in prison after being convicted for his part in an illegal dogfighting ring, his subsequent return to the National Football League, his work with the Humane Society of the United States and his plans for the future.”
Oprah had bet CNN’s Piers Morgan that she would land an interview with the inspiring football hero before Morgan. Several days ago, Oprah tweeted she was calling off the bet. Now Larry King’s replacement is tweeting his explanation for Oprah nixing the wager: “Mr, Vick’s people told me he couldn’t do [an interview] with either of us if bet remained, as he can’t collude in gambling.”
