Michael Vick was again brilliant in primetime, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a 34-24 victory over the Houston Texans on Thursday night. Vick completed 22 of 33 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 48 yards and another touchdown. The Texans outscored the Eagles 14-0 in the third quarter to take a brief lead, but had no answer for Vick in the fourth quarter.
Vick opened the game by leading the Eagles on a 12-play, 88-yard drive capped by a one-yard touchdown pass. At the half, the Eagles led 20-10, but the Texans took a 24-20 lead on Arian Foster’s three-yard touchdown run with 50 seconds left in the third. On the ensuing drive, Vick needed just six plays to take the Eagles 60 yards down the field, running for a touchdown to give the Eagles back the lead.
On the Eagles next possession, Vick led the Eagles on another touchdown drive, eating up almost six minutes with a 10-play 70 yard drive that culminated in Vick’s second touchdown pass of the night.
The win gives Vick and the Eagles a half-game lead on the Giants in the NFC East. The Giants host Donovan McNabb and the Redskins on Sunday. The Eagles have 10 days to prepare for their next game at the Cowboys, then play at the Giants in Week 15 before finishing the season with home games against the Vikings and Cowboys. The Eagles already beat the Giants back in Week 11. New York’s remaining schedule includes road games against the Vikings, Packers and Redskins, so a 3-1 finish is probably all the Eagles need to guarantee they win the division.
As for the Texans, at 5-7 they’re still only a game and a half back in the AFC South, but would need a ton of help to win the division and make the first playoff appearance in franchise history.
