The NFL’s Wild Card Weekend got off to a wild start with a stunning upset: the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks, the first team ever to make the playoffs with a losing record, knocked off the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints, winning at home as double-digit underdogs. They were the only home team to win one of the four first-round games this weekend.
The defending AFC champion Indianapolis Colts lost at home to the New York Jets on Saturday night. On Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens became the only one of the four favorites to win this weekend, easily routing the Kansas City Chiefs. In the final game of the weekend, the NFC’s No. 6 seed, the Green Bay Packers, knocked out the Philadelphia Eagles and the most exciting player in pro football, Michael Vick. That leaves just eight teams still alive in the playoffs.
Next weekend’s schedule with early lines:
Saturday, 4:30 PM ET on CBS: No. 5 Baltimore Ravens at No. 2 Pittsburgh Steelers
Ravens +160, Steelers -180
Ravens and Steelers split two games during the regular season, both decided by three points.
Saturday, 8:00 PM ET on FOX: No. 6 Green Bay Packers at No. 1 Atlanta Falcons
Packers +115, Falcons -135
The winner of this game will probably be favored to win the NFC Championship Game the following week.
Sunday, 1:00 PM ET on FOX: No. 4 Seattle Seahawks at No. 2 Chicago Bears
Seahawks +350, Bears -400; Spread: Bears -10, Over/Under: 40
The Seahawks beat the Bears in Chicago during the regular season, and are just one win away from a .500 record and possibly hosting the NFC Championship Game if the Packers beat the Falcons.
Sunday, 4:30 PM ET on CBS: No. 6 New York Jets at No. 1 New England Patriots
Jets +325, Patriots -400; Spread: Patriots -8.5, Over/Under: 45.5
The Jets and Patriots also split their season series, with the home team winning each game by a lot.
After this weekend, it’ll be interesting to see if there are more upsets or things start to even out and settle down. I wouldn’t be shocked if we again see two or three road teams win in the divisional round.
