Strikeforce honored Frank Shamrock in the middle of their “Fedor vs. Werdum” event last Saturday night, allowing Shamrock to thank all of the people that helped him throughout his career. And then Frank announced his retirement from MMA. There is no doubt that he could still compete, but he chose to walk away safely and with head held high.
Here are other fighters that should call it a career.
Ken Shamrock
The truth is that Shamrock was being beaten badly years ago. He’s only fought twice since 2006. To comeback at age 46 with such a layoff would not be wise. But he is. Shamrock will fight Pedro Rizzo in July.
Jens Pulver
Jens has lost 7 of his last 8 fights. He went from the UFC to the WEC and still couldn’t keep up with the breed of MMA fighter. Yet Jens is heading back in the cage to fight again in August.
Good MMA betting opportunity for Saturday as the WEC heads to PPV for the first time with their ‘Aldo vs. Faber’ card. In addition to potentially being one of the best MMA cards of the year, there are several strong wagering opportunities in the top matches. In the main event, Jose Aldo will defend his WEC Featherweight Championship against former champ Urijah Faber. On the undercard, Ben Henderson will make a defense of his WEC lightweight title against Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone and Mike Brown will try to fight his way back into top contender status for the featherweight championship as he faces a tough opponent in Manny Gamburyan. Here’s how we see it from a betting standpoint. Lines are from Bookmaker:
WEC ALDO VS FABER:
MAIN EVENT–JOSE ALDO VS. URIJAH FABER:
DREAM 13 will take place late tonight/early Monday in Yokohama, Japan. It’ll be broadcast live on HD Net in the US beginning at 3 AM Eastern/12 midnight Pacific. Most sportsbooks that offer a good selection of MMA betting will take action on the event. DREAM 13 will see the return of Josh Barnett to MMA competition for the first time since his failed drug test and the ensuing fallout that spelled the demise of Affliction’s MMA promotion. There’s a number of interesting matchups on the card with the main event a featherweight championship matchup between Bibiano Fernandes and Joachim Hansen.
DREAM 13:
MAIN EVENT–BIBIANO FERNANDES VS. JOACHIM HANSEN:
